Mexico resurrects the US with a beating in the World Classic

Coming off a comfortable victory over Great Britain in their opener of the 2023 World Baseball Classic on Saturday, the US ran into a Mexican ninth team on Sunday that needed a win after losing to Colombia and was stunned by a 11-5 loss. at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona.

Boasting plenty of seasoned big-league talent such as Randy Arozarena, Alex Verdugo, Rowdy Tellez and Luis Urías, Mexico pummeled a star-studded United States, defending champions and Group favorites. c.

Mexico lost to Colombia 5-4 after extra time on Saturday and needed a win, otherwise they would be virtually eliminated. Now, the Mexican representative has a 1-1 record, just like the United States. Canada, who beat Great Britain early by the “mercy rule” by winning 18-8 in 6.5 innings, leads the sector with a 1-0 record, the same as Colombia. Great Britain are virtually out of contention after losing their first two games.

Washington Nationals player Joey Meneses, a native of Culiacán, redeemed Mexico’s hopes in the Clásico, hitting two building-shaking home runs. Statcast was able to measure the exit velocity of the home runs hit by Meneses (109.1 and 102.9 mph, respectively), but was unable to capture the decibel levels inside Chase Field as the balls soared over the left-field wall. Despite the fact that the United States, current Clásico champion, acted as the local team, the 47,534 attendees were a favorable audience for Mexico.

Mexico will have the day off this Monday after their emotional victory, and will play again on Tuesday in Pool C against Great Britain at 7 pm PT on FS1. The United States will play this Monday at 7 pm on FS1 against Canada in a do-or-die match for the Americans, as a defeat could eliminate them from the competition.

Mexico is now 3-1 against the United States in its history in the World Baseball Classic.
