The body of Gaël Monfils lets go again. Injured in the hand, the French abandoned Wednesday during his first match at the Masters 1000 in Miami against his compatriot Ugo Humbert. Monfils (280th player in the world) came out grimacing in pain as the two players were tied (3-3) in the first set. It was the third match for the former world No.6 (in 2016) since his retirement in the round of 16 of the Masters 1000 in Canada last August. In Indian Wells, in early March, Monfils lost in the first round to Australian Jordan Thompson in straight sets.
“We’re going to do exams, and we’ll see what happens.“, Monfils told AFP after leaving the court on retirement for the 24th time in his career. “Of course, you have goals and you want to achieve them. But sometimes you gotta take a step back and see. And then, of course, if one day I can’t anymore, I can’t anymore. But I’ll do anything to keep playing. I like what I do. I love my sport. You know, I could have quit a long time ago, but I still love it. I still have so much fun.”

Heel operation last year and foot injury
Last year, Gaël Monfils had heel surgery and missed Roland-Garros and the entire season on grass. On his return after three months of absence in Montreal, he injured his foot and ended his season in October. Ugo Humbert (78th in the world) will face Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic (35th), exempted from the first round.
