Marvin Ducksch saves Werder draw against Gladbach

Borussia Mönchengladbach has forgotten how to win: Even in the home game against newly promoted Werder Bremen, coach Daniel Farke’s team, which had started to falter, did not get more than 2: 2 (0: 0) despite leading twice. Since the success against Bayern Munich (3:2), the Fohlen-Elf has not won in four games.

Goals from Marcus Thuram (48th) and Florian Neuhaus (73rd) were not enough for Borussia, who will have to bury their tender dreams of Europe for good. The table neighbor from Bremen came back twice through Marvin Ducksch (65th and 89th) and can put the topic of relegation to the files.

“We want to be dominant and set the tone,” Farke had demanded before kick-off – and was initially heard: Borussia started with a lot of vigour, let the ball run and, after a mistake by the only 17-year-old Werder defender Fabio Chiarodia, came back first good chance – Lars Stindl missed (8th).

Chiarodia, at 17 years and 285 days youngest starting XI player in Bremen Bundesliga history, made his debut for Werder, as did goalkeeper Michael Zetterer. Coach Ole Werner’s team was badly weakened by a wave of illnesses – regular keeper Jiri Pavlenka also had to pass at short notice. Substitute Zetterer distinguished himself with a brilliant save when he defused a shot from Thuram from five meters (22nd).

Bremen’s emergency team held up well, combined well and created chances after half an hour. Gladbach were lucky when striker Niclas Füllkrug went down after a duel with Jonas Hofmann, but the penalty whistle didn’t come (32′).

It was back and forth in the sold-out Borussia Park: The lively filling jug failed at the returning goalkeeper Jonas Omlin (41′), on the other side Thuram lobbed the ball over the goal (42′).

The Frenchman did better immediately after the break. After Mitchell Weiser lost the ball, Hofmann served Thuram with a hoe, and the striker hit the far corner from 16 yards out. Gladbach now had a clear chance, only Hofmann (55th/60th) missed several opportunities for a preliminary decision.

The penalty comes from the foot when Ducksch scored his seventh goal of the season after submitting Romano Schmid, who had just been substituted on. But Gladbach had the right answer when Neuhaus, who had been injured for a long time, scored from 16 meters. But Ducksch answered again.
