“Leaving PSG was the biggest mistake of my life”

Gianluigi Buffon regrets having left PSG in 2019. The Italian considers his choice to be the biggest mistake of his life. The goalkeeper also did not digest the elimination conceded against Manchester United, in the Champions League.

The legendary Gianluigi Buffon, now 45 and goalkeeper of Parma (Italian Serie B), spoke about his career during an appearance on the Twitch channel of his former teammate in the Italian selection, Christian Vieri.

The Italian veteran notably returned to his time at Paris Saint-Germain during the 2018-19 season. “It was the best experience of my life. I felt free. I quickly learned French, chatted with people on the street, visited museums… I felt like I was playing in an incredible team”said Buffon.

The doorman shared the locker room there with stars such as Kylian Mbappé, Neymar, Edinson Cavani, Angel Di Maria, Marco Verratti, Dani Alves, and even Thiago Silva. Asked about the then PSG’s chances of winning the Champions League under the direction of Thomas Tuchel, Buffon did not hide his sadness: “I was convinced that we were the strongest. We went to Manchester for the first leg of the round of 16 against United and dominated, but they knocked us out on the return. It’s the biggest disappointment of my career.”confessed the 2006 world champion.

The following season, Buffon left PSG to return to Juventus in Turin. “It was the biggest mistake of my life, I gave up 10 million euros. I was told that Areola would play in the Champions League and I didn’t accept it. For me, whoever deserves must play. That’s why I returned to Juve. I regretted it afterwards, because Areola got injured and they recruited Keylor Navas in his place”, he lamented. Gianluigi Buffon finally spoke about his end of career. “I would like to retire after next season, no more. I’m competitive and I don’t want to be seen as a second choice.”he concluded.

Gianluigi Buffon made his professional debut in 1994. The native of Carrara totaled 968 club games (for 819 goals conceded and 427 clean sheets) and 176 selections with the Squadra Azzurra.
