The past year was a special one for the Judo and Ju-Jitsu Club Solothurn. The club celebrated its 70th anniversary. At the General Assembly in the Capuchin monastery in Solothurn on Friday,
March 17th, club president Francesco Ferraro looked back on the anniversary year. It’s been a multi-high year, both on and off the mat.

The members of the association particularly remember the training with judoka Hiroshi Katanishi, who was a guest in Solothurn and who gave the athletes an understanding of the Japanese training philosophy during three hours of training. Another highlight was the school tournament, which the club held together with Judo Kwai Oensingen. The youngest club members massed and later enjoyed a dinner together. In general, Ferraro was happy about the young athletes: “It’s a nice development that new students keep coming to the training sessions and getting to know our sport.” We also owe this to the commitment of the voluntary leaders, who work for the association in their free time.

Commitment to young people can later pay off in competitive sports. This is shown by the example of Michelle Fernández. Last year she won the bronze medal at the Swiss Championships in Lausanne in the elite women’s -52 kilo category and represented Switzerland at the European Universiade.

Nicole Hirt and Daniel Pérez both won the silver medal in the Masters category in Lausanne.

Ferraro himself resigned at the AGM after six years as club president. The other members of the board were unanimously confirmed in office by the members of the association present. With Marc Hirt, who succeeds Ferraro, and Yana Grossenbacher, two more people were elected to the board.

After the official part, the club members present sat together over raclette to look back on the past year and look forward to the coming months. Various events are still waiting for the judo club in the future: For example, the club fair in Solothurn, which takes place in May and gives the club the opportunity to bring all interested visitors closer to the sport of judo.
