FC Twente won 2-1 at home against AZ on Sunday evening and Manfred Ugalde accounted for both goals by the Tukkers in the first half. Afterwards, trainer Ron Jans was full of praise for the small center striker from Costa Rica.

“Why did I hem then not prepared before? Well that has to do with Ricky van Wolfswinkel on the one hand,” the coach explains on the website of De Telegraaf. “But also: if Manfred started in the base once, we were like gosh, as a substitute he is great with his energy. In addition, he trained very well in recent weeks,” Jans looks back.

“Manfred is a young talented striker with a great mentality. He never gives up. Although he comes from Central America, he has such a typical South American mentality. Wonderful”, he continues enthusiastically. “He doesn’t really rise above anyone, but he can head well. If you think as a defender: I have some time, that can already be fatal,” says Jans.

“Because Manfred doesn’t give you that time, he keeps going. How he anticipated the long balls on Sunday, how he held them or headed them through, how he covered the balls, I haven’t seen him that well yet,” he concludes. “This is his best phase with us. He really deserved his chance. It is such a pity that he is not owned by FC Twente. Just now that he has been developing so well lately.”
