Interview Nico Hülkenberg: “The car is badmouthed in this country” – Sport

Anna Dreher and Philipp Schneider

When Nico Hülkenberg, 35, rolls back onto the starting grid this Sunday at the Formula 1 season opener in Bahrain after three years without a regular cockpit in the premier class, then for him it is also about getting rid of a curious record: he drove 181 races between 2010 and 2019, but not once did he stand on the podium. At the small and previously unsuccessful Team Haas, he has now inherited the cockpit from Mick Schumacher, from whom team boss Günther Steiner separated after two years of training in order to rely on an experienced pilot in the future. After three days of testing in the new car, Hülkenberg appeared in front of the camera in a good mood. The car is apparently fine, and his team boss anyway, says Hülkenberg: “He says it like it is, to the point, no bullshit, that’s actually how I am.”
