If the NBA MVP were voted today, Joel Embiid would win by a hair

The ESPN does not have patience and prefers to cultivate discussion and debate about the race for the MVP. With little more than a week to finish the regular season, the American media published a survey with 100 journalists with a voice and a vote when distributing the most important prize at the individual level in the NBA. The winner was the third different this season, which began with Jayson Tatum (Boston Celtics) as the favorite, then passed the throne to Nikola Jokic (Denver Nuggets) and, now, narrowly points to Joel Embiid (Philadelphia 76ers).

The result of the last survey shows a minimal victory for the Cameroonian center, who would win by two points the vote despite being elected in first position less than the Serb. Third, and not far behind, he would be Giannis Antetokounmpo (Milwaukee Bucks)

If it concludes like this, the race for the MVP would be the tightest in history since the media vote for the winner. Since 1981, the first year the current system was applied, the smallest margin of victory was in 1990 with Magic Johnson taking the trophy ahead of Charles Barkley for only 22 points. These were the four closest votes in history:

89-90

Magic Johnson vs. Charles Barkley

22 points

Los Angeles Lakers legend Earvin Magic Johnson got his third NBA MVP in a tight vote that, in addition to Charles Barkley, also included Michael Jordan in the Top 3

96-97

Karl Malone vs. Michael Jordan

29 points

The Postman won his first MVP by a narrow voting margin over Michael Jordan, a five-time Chicago Bulls legend.

80-81

Julius Erving vs. Larry Bird

31 points

Dr. J won his only MVP in the format’s debut year of voting by a panel of journalists by a narrow margin over Larry Bird, who would go on to win three consecutive MVP awards from 1984-1986.

04-05

Steve Nash vs. Shaquille O’Neal

34 votes

The first MVP of the Canadian point guard came with a lot of suspense. He then he would win the next one, consecutively, with the largest margin in the votes. Shaq won an MVP trophy in 2000.
