Heidenheim missed the leap to first place

Dhe 1. FC Heidenheim has missed the leap to the top of the table in the 2nd Bundesliga. Coach Frank Schmidt’s team had to settle for a 1-1 (1-1) draw at Fortuna Düsseldorf on matchday 24. With a win, FCH would have overtaken the previous leaders Darmstadt 98 and Hamburger SV, who are still challenged at Karlsruher SC on Sunday.

Goalscorer Tim Kleindienst (20th) gave the southern Germans the lead, Emmanuel Iyoha (27th) managed to equalize. Heidenheim’s Denis Thomalla was sent off after an assault with a red card (77′). FCH remains third in the table with 47 points and at least kept Fortuna (39) at a distance in fifth place.

Heidenheim, who ended the Darmstadt series of 21 league games without defeat last week, initially saw themselves under great pressure in Düsseldorf. Practically out of nowhere, however, Kleindienst hit his head with his 16th goal of the season to guide the visitors.

Düsseldorf was not impressed in front of 26,827 spectators, Iyoha equalized seven minutes after the deficit after a nice combination.

After the change of sides, the encounter was balanced, but also extremely tough. With a majority, Ao Tanaka missed the huge chance to make it 2-1 for Fortuna (84th).
