Gladbach, Lars Stindl: Green light for the derby

Preparations for the derby against 1. FC Köln (Sunday, 3.30 p.m.) started in Borussia Park on Tuesday. One of the most important pillars of the Fohlenelf was there again.

The group that Daniel Farke was able to gather around him on Tuesday was still small, but Borussia’s head coach was able to welcome at least two returnees. Lars Stindl was one of them. After the foal captain suffered a bruised foot in the last home game against Werder Bremen (2:2) and then had to take a break due to illness, the 34-year-old went back to full training with the team.

“Of course it wasn’t ideal that Lars missed a week, but now he’s back and there’s still some time until Sunday for the derby at 1. FC Köln (3.30 p.m., LIVE! at kicker). So I assume that he will be available to us,” Farke said after the session. Stindl himself looked ahead to Sunday and explained: “It’s a special game for the club, for us and for our fans – which of course we absolutely want to win.”

The foals, who have been waiting for a win for four games, are relieved of a great deal of worry with the comeback of their leader. With a total of eleven points (five goals, six assists), the veteran is third in the internal scorer list behind Jonas Hofmann (18 points, eight goals, ten assists) and Marcus Thuram (16 points, twelve goals, four assists).

And in addition to a much improved defense compared to the past games, Borussia will also need a good offensive performance if they want to survive in Cologne. The conversion of chances was one of the main problems, why since the 3:2 win over FC Bayern there hasn’t been a win (two draws, two defeats).

Weigl and Jantschke are still missing

Of the ten national players, at least the only 18-year-old from Luxembourg, Yvandro Borges Sanches, has already returned. “On Thursday,” says Farke, “everybody will be back, but some of them will also be doing regenerative work. So I don’t expect the entire squad to return to team training until Friday.”

The injured Julian Weigl (partial tear of the syndesmosis) and Tony Jantschke (meniscus tear) are not yet an option for Cologne. Both are in advanced training and are still working individually.
