Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers) lived up to his favorite role on day 1 of Tirreno-Adriatico. The Italian fighter jet was the fastest in Lido di Camaiore in the time trial of 11.5 kilometers. Ganna rode in better weather conditions than, among others, Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma). Our compatriot took no risks and played no role.

The 1st stage of Tirreno-Adriatico in a nutshell:

  • Winner of the day: Filippo Ganna boxed in a different weight class than the rest today. The differences in the time trial remained relatively small between the other riders today, until the Italian champion appeared on the scene. The opposition was completely blown away: Ganna won the time trial with almost half a minute ahead.
  • Loser of the day: Gambled and lost. Wout van Aert was one of the first riders to start his time trial, hoping to be able to ride in better weather conditions. Most of the other toppers opted for a later starting time and they turned out to be right.
  • Loser of the day (2): Adam Yates was seen in advance as perhaps the top favorite for the overall win in this Tirreno-Adriatico. The Brit already got a 1’18” on Ganna today and loses around half a minute to the better classification men today.

Rain-soaked time trial is prey for convincing Ganna

The weather gods had sent hellish conditions towards the west coast of Italy for this first stage of Tirreno-Adriatico.

Rain fell in buckets in the hours before the start of the time trial. Not a good signal for the early starters, including Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma).

Wisely, Van Aert decided not to take any risks on his first race day of the season. The expected duel with Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers) was therefore never possible.

About three hours after the start of Van Aert, the sun even came through carefully in Lido di Camaiore. Most GC men breathed a sigh of relief after choosing that later start time and finished close to each other for a large part.

Among those late starters was also Filippo Ganna. As the fourth to last runner, the Italian steam train went on the rails.

He put the crown on the work of Ineos Grenadiers and convincingly shot to victory. Teammate Magnus Sheffield (3rd in the end) had been on the hot seat for a long time earlier in the day and Thymen Arensman (6th) also highlighted Ineos’ strong team performance.

Ganna: “I’m not a GC rider”

Philip Ganna already put the opposition at half a minute and more after his strong time trial. Many classification riders are already looking at a gap of about a minute.

“But I’m not a classification rider,” Ganna replies with a smile to questions about the classification.

“It was a beautiful day today and it’s always nice to be back in Italy and wear the blue Tirreno-Adriatico leader’s jersey. We’ll take it day by day from tomorrow.”

With a plan to defend the leader’s jersey? “I don’t know yet, we’ll see what the team’s plan is.”

Sheffield: “Still suffering from my fall in the Strade Bianche”

Two days after his crash in the Strade Bianche Magnus Sheffield (3e) a good time trial.

“My shoulder still hurts a bit, but during the race you just have to go full throttle. I’m not 100% yet, but it’s getting better.”

The 20-year-old American is the first leader in the youth classification of this Tirreno-Adriatico. “I’m really happy with the progress I’m making in my second season with the team.”

Sheffield also hopes to excel on Flemish roads later this spring. “This week will be very important to build up my condition, especially towards the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix.”

  1. 16 hours . Just like last year, the Italian time trial gun therefore wins the first stage of Tirreno-Adriatico. In this kind of riding, Filippo Ganna is simply the best rider in the world. Tomorrow he can shine in the leader’s jersey in a stage that will probably result in a sprinter’s chance. .
  2. 15h57. Ganna wins! . Valerio Conti, the last rider to start, rides the last kilometer under the rag. He is already above the time of Ganna, who has now officially won the time trial. .
  3. 3:55 pm. We still have to wait for the last riders to trickle into the time trial. The winner is already determined with Ganna. .
  4. 15 hours 53. 12’28” is finally his time. Filippo Ganna is almost half a minute better than Lennard Kämna. The difference is therefore clear: Ganna wins the time trial and is logically the first leader in this Tirreno-Adriatico. .
  5. Ganna under the rag. The Italian steam train blows merrily on. He only has one kilometer to cover in this time trial and will win with force majeure. . 15 hours 52.
  6. 3:49 PM. Joao Almeida is doing a lot better than his teammate Adam Yates. The Portuguese enters in a time of 13’09”. .
  7. 3:48 pm. Loetsenko and Van der Poel finish close to each other. De Kazak does just that in the provisional top 10 of the day, Van der Poel outside. .
  8. 15h46. Ganna on collision course. At the intermediate point, the Italian is already 10 (!) seconds under Hepburn’s time. Ganna seems to be out of category in this time trial. .
  9. 3:44 PM. Van der Poel and Lutsenko coming. Both did not record a bad time at the first intermediate point. Will one of them try to win the day? .
  10. 15h43. Leknessund with the 6th fastest time. The Norwegian from DSM does well and loses only 13 seconds to Kämna. A starting position that is not out of place for a good ranking. .
  11. 15h41. Bad luck for a classification man: Guillaume Martin loses a lot of time after a puncture. Mikel Landa also loses about 40 seconds on the better time trialists today. .
  12. 15:38. Wilco Kelderman sets the sixth fastest time and is one of the better classification riders today. .
  13. 15h37. Kämna dethrones Sheffield. It couldn’t last for Sheffield. More and more riders came very close to the American’s time. Lennard Kämna is the first to actually dive under: at 12’56” he is 3 seconds faster than Sheffield. .
  14. 15:36. Mas limits the damage. The runner-up of the past Vuelta loses a second more than Ciccone. That is also not too bad for the Spaniard. .
  15. 15h35. A provisional 12th time for Giulio Ciccone (Trek-Segafredo). That is more than decent from the Italian. .
  16. 3:34 pm. In the meantime, another outsider has left for the day victory with Mathieu van der Poel. .
  17. 15:33. Hepburn won’t be. Again it’s only a hair, 2 seconds in particular, but Sheffield just seems to have ridden a very strong second part. Hepburn is currently 2nd on the line. .
  18. 15h30. Drives almost the same time as Hepburn at the intermediate point: Lennard Kämna. So there are still at least 2 serious hijackers on the coast off Sheffield. .
  19. 15h28. Again just not. Sheffield is getting warmer. Thymen Arensman, his teammate at Ineos, finally set the 3rd fastest time at 8 seconds from Sheffield. .
  20. 15h27. Hepburn the fastest on the way. The Australian of Jayco AlUla is of course a specialist in this field and also emphasizes that. He actually dips under Sheffield’s time at the intermediate point. .
