Evenepoel already knows battle plan for Giro: “Distance from Roglic in time trials” | cycling

Remco Evenepoel leaves the Tour of Catalonia with his head held high. The world champion could not keep Primoz Roglic from winning the final, but as second at barely six seconds, the world champion still fueled the necessary confidence towards the Giro. There he comes face to face with the Slovenian again.

Overall victory in the Tour of Catalonia was just not possible, but Remco Evenepoel can still present a successful report with 2 stage victories and the same number of jerseys (youth and mountain classification). So he seems to be completely on schedule for the Giro. There the world champion of Soudal – Quick Step will meet the tormentor Primoz Roglic again from May 6.

In Catalonia it became a battle in the mountains and Evenepoel could not show his time trial skills. An important difference with the Giro. There the riders are presented with more than 70 km against the clock. With two time trials of 18 and 34 km, the opening week promises to provide fireworks.

“Uphill we are equal to each other for the time being. It will be difficult to release Roglic on the climbs. So it will come down to putting Roglic behind in the time trials in the first week.”

No sinecure against the Olympic time trial champion.

Plow with confidence

In addition to Evenepoel himself, his team also seems to be on schedule for the Giro. “I am very proud of what we have shown this week. We have always taken the initiative and made the course uphill. In the end it paid off twice and with a bit of luck it could have been even more.”

“In that respect we have made great strides compared to last year. We can now both make and control the course. Everyone in the team is currently overflowing with confidence.”

What does Remco’s schedule look like towards the Giro? “First I will stay in Barcelona with Oumi for two more days. That rest is welcome, because on Thursday we leave for Tenerife for a second altitude training. That will be tough, but if I see how good the legs are already, it can only pay off towards the Giro. I always come out stronger from such an altitude training.”

By having a carefree season last year, I improved another 5 percent.

Remco Evenepoel

There is no doubt that Evenepoel is an absolute winner. But after his final win in the Vuelta and world title, Remco seems to have taken steps. “By having a worry-free season last year, I have improved 5 percent this season.”

Good advice that he also wants to pass on to his younger compatriots. Evenepoel saw Cian Uijtdebroeks (9th) and Lennert Van Eetvelt (15th) interfere in the debates for the classification in the Tour of Catalonia.

“I advise them to learn from the greats and take enough time to get stronger. Cian surprised me on the long uphill climbs. I recently ran into him on a training internship and I noticed that he really already lives like a professional. From weighing nutrition to following the training schedule down to the last detail.”

“Lennert is someone who has just come to squeak. I think that as Belgians we can be proud of the steps our young people are making in the rounds.”
