Sunderland decided to suspend Jack Diamond after the player was accused of rape and sexual assault. The crime allegedly took place last year.
Diamond, 23, was arrested after investigations were completed by local police.
Now, the player must appear before the Magistrates Court of South Tyneside (England) in May. In a statement, the club said the player was suspended with immediate effect and his loan deal was also terminated.
– Sunderland AFC have been notified that criminal charges have been brought against Jack Diamond by the Crown Prosecution Service. The player has been suspended with immediate effect pending the outcome of the court proceedings, and his loan deal at Lincoln City Football Club has also been terminated. As this matter is subject to legal proceedings, the club will not be making any further statements at this time,” he said.
