Dominic Thiem exclusively on Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal: “He’s the one to beat”

“I have the feeling that there are some players who can beat Djokovic and Nadal,” says Thiem as part of the Eurosport podcast “Ruud Talk” with expert Barbara Schett and Casper Ruud.

The Austrian adds: “For the tennis world, however, it would be nice if there were one last big showdown, for example in Roland Garros. But Novak is clearly the one to beat.”

According to Thiem, Djokovic will be the favorite in the remaining Grand Slam tournaments. Only at the French Open, Rafael Nadal’s parade competition, does he still see the Spaniard ahead – at least on one condition.

“The only tournament where it’s different is Roland Garros. If Rafael is fit in France, then he’s the one to beat. He’s won 14 times there, that’s crazy,” says Thiem. He adds: “But if you’ve seen Novak’s performances at the Australian Open, it’s clear that he’s the favorite at both Wimbledon and the US Open.”

Thiem names several co-favorites

Regarding his statement that he has several players on screen who are able to defeat Djokovic and Nadal, Thiem explains. “There’s Carlos Alcaraz, of course. He won the final at the US Open in an outstanding manner. I watched the highlights several times, his level was incredible.”

Podcast “host” Ruud also expects Thiem to have good chances. “I feel that if Casper and Carlos play their best tennis, they can win against Novak and Rafa even in a Grand Slam. I have no doubts about that.”

The 2020 US Open winner also names Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alexander Zverev as potential opponents. “I also trust Stefanos, he didn’t have his best day in the final of the Australian Open (3: 6, 6: 7, 6: 7 against Djokovic, ed.). Sascha is currently on his way back. There are So four, five guys who can beat anyone. That makes it very exciting.”
