Deschamps gave Mbappe the captain’s ribbon and Griezmann threatens to leave the national team

After the departure of Lloris, the DT decided that the 24-year-old star should put on the bracelet, but the Atlético player believed that it was his moment.

Didier Deschamps chose Kylian Mbappe as the successor to the experienced Hugo Lloris and will be the new captain of the France team. The decision, which breaks with the tradition of giving the bracelet to the most experienced of the squad, caused problems in the dressing room and, according to French media, Antoine Griezmann I would be thinking of leaving the team.

At just 24 years old, Mbappé already has 66 international matches and 36 goals with the ‘Bleus’, with whom he won the 2018 World Cup in Russia and reached the final in Qatar-2022, lost to Argentina on penalties, adding 12 goals in World Cups.

Mbappé, international since 2017, replaces goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, who was captain since 2010. The English Tottenham goalkeeper decided to announce his retirement from the French team last December after the World Cup.

According to L’Equipe, Deschamps made the decision after having a talk yesterday with Mbappé and with the other candidate for the captaincy, Antoine Griezmann, forward of Atlético de Madrid.

Griezmann will from now on be second captain, replacing Manchester United central defender Raphaël Varane, who also left the squad after the World Cup in Qatar.

However, L’Equipe said that Griezmann did not like DT’s decision at all and the experienced player would be thinking of leaving the National Team.

Mbappé will debut the bracelet this coming Friday, in the first qualifying match for Euro 2024 that France will play at the Stade de France in Paris against the Netherlands.
