Deck is life insurance for Real Madrid

Gabriel Deck came from making his worst game in the Euroleague in this season. Little or nothing came of it in the defeat against Cazoo Baskonia, but in the second match of this European double day, against Valencia Basket, he showed that under his expressionless face hides a player who is usually life insurance for Real Madrid. The whites once again grabbed the eaves to get out of the compromised situation in which a Valencia Basket had placed them.

The taronjas fought to the last breath. They only gave in to the intensity of ‘El Tortuga’, a nickname that does not do justice to the impetus that the Argentine puts on. he finished with 18 points -16 of them in the second half-, seven rebounds -some decisive offensive attacks in the last period- and a PIR of 26, his third best European mark of the season. on his back, Madrid achieved a victory (95-91) that allows it to continue stalking the lead. Valencia, meanwhile, is a little further from the playoffs.

In the last 69 seconds, with the score at 88-86, Deck added two free throws, then recovered a ball after the referees reviewed the action, later assisted for a dunk from Walter Tavares and, finally, put the final score from the personnel line with 13 seconds remaining. An SUV that minutes before and with the help of Vincent Poirierefficient in the face of the foul problems of the Cape Verdean colossus, had pulled the whites when Valencia threatened (53-55). As in the Cup, he showed his face until the end, but he lacked finishing.

Madrid started crushing. His first five baskets were dunks and Tavares acted as an assistant. Whites only existed on the inside while Valencia, as it would do all night, threatened from the outside (15 triples). The lead at the end of the first quarter had been taken by the locals coinciding with their first two triples (24-20). Then the dynamics changed and they began to add three by three. The answer was given by Jasiel Rivero, who showed a great variety of resources to score 11 points in a row: a triple, a shot on the board, a basket from the past ring… Madrid had a hard time deciphering the Cuban.

Round trip partials

Then he took a break and the whites took advantage of it. A few doses of magic from Sergio Rodríguez and a triple from Rudy Fernández opened a 14-4 run who shot them (47-35, min 19). The Petr Cornelie-Deck couple had worked as an inside game. Valencia stitched up the hole at halftime (49-40) He came out of the locker room like a whirlwind: in three minutes, a 4-15 run based on three-pointers and culminating in a 3+1 score by Xavi López-Aróstegui (53-55).

Sergio and Rudy appeared to try to put out the fire. Significant that they were. But the chief firefighter was Deck, who began his deployment in the middle of the arbitration nonsense that was the third quarter. Receiving in the middle post and playing with his back, looking for the basket or the pass, loading the attack rebound like a panther… With the collaboration of Poirier it was closed at 71-65. The work of the Frenchman in front and behind gave Madrid nine points of rent (81-72), but Valencia still had something to say.

Chris Jones took command and scored 10 points in the last three minutes. First, a 2-10 run ended that revived the recent ghost of Baskonia at the WiZink Center (83-82) and then he resisted his fate until the last moment (93-91, with 15 seconds to go). With Deck, however, he couldn’t. Madrid was the beneficiary of life insurance.
