DEATH – Basketball leader Sergio Abreu dies

Sergio Abreu, one of the most successful basketball coaches in the top district tournament, passed away yesterday due to health problems, his family announced.

“With deep sadness, the Abreu Lahóz family announces the decline of Sergio Andrés Abréu Del Monte, our adored father, beloved husband, doting grandfather, unconditional brother, unmatched uncle, tireless coach, teacher and mentor of a whole generation of athletes and students” says the communication.

“Sergio passed away peacefully at the age of 68 surrounded by his family in the city of Atlanta, Georgia, United States, after several health problems, leaving behind his wife Carmen, his daughters Nicaudy, Dayna and Anell, his grandchildren Sergio, Emilia, Daniela and Alicia, their brothers María del Carmen, José Alberto and Ramón, their mother-in-law, son-in-law, nephews and brothers-in-law”, he adds.

“The Abreu Lahóz family appreciates all the affectionate attention from their friends and relatives, as well as all the consideration and attention from the press. The details of his wake and burial will be communicated later, ”he ends.

Abreu was the champion leader with the San Carlos club in the Superior Basketball of the National District, in the years 1982, 1987, 1988 and 1989.

He was also runner-up in the 1990 top tournament, belonging to a very small circle in the history of the event, in which only three coaches have managed to obtain three titles or more continuously, the first being Osiris Duquela with San Carlos 1978-1981. and Fernando Teruel with Mauricio Báez 1984-1986.

He was Duquela’s assistant in the first championships of the San Carlos club from 1978 to 1981.
