Dario Cataldo suffers multiple fractures after the massive fall at the premiere of the Volta

MADRID, 20 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Italian runner Dario Cataldo (Trek-Segafredo) suffered multiple fractures on Monday after being involved in the massive fall in the final kilometers of the first stage of the Volta a Catalunya, according to his team in a statement.

“A CT scan performed at the hospital revealed that Dario suffered a fracture to the left femoral head and right acetabulum (the ball-and-socket hip joint), two transverse fractures of the lumbar spine without neurological impact, multiple broken ribs with a collapsed lung on both sides and a fractured left clavicle”, listed the note offered by Trek-Segafredo.

At the premiere of the Volta, just under 5.5 kilometers to go, the negative note of the opening day of the test arrived. And it is that a look back in a bad area, at a devilish speed, caused a massive fall with about ten victims involved that made Cataldo bleed, fallen on the ground, with Michael Storer (Groupama-FDJ) or Anthony Delaplace (Arkéa-Samsic ) also implicated.

After the medical tests, the team has confirmed that the Italian cyclist “is conscious and hemodynamically stable”, so he will be transferred to another hospital in Catalonia. “After a second assessment at the new hospital in Girona, he will undergo surgery for a fractured femur,” the statement concluded.
