Cervera’s talk to the Oviedo squad: “We have to play what we know how to do”

Álvaro Cervera does not stand out for being a coach close to his players. In that he differs from Jon Pérez Bolo, his predecessor. The Oviedo coach keeps his distance. It’s his style. He speaks clearly and concisely to the staff. simple orders. Yesterday was one of those days. Oviedo returned to work after a draw against Tenerife (0-0), which thanks to Granada’s agonizing draw against Ponferradina (2-2) keeps them with a cushion on the relegation of six points. But the situation is not good for the blue team: more than a month without winning and the same offensive problems throughout the season. That is why yesterday morning at El Requexón began with a talk on the grass of Cervera. The coach gathered his players in a circle to give them the tools that, in his opinion, will get the blue team out of the dangerous zone.

There were about ten minutes in which the footballers listened carefully to the coach’s instructions. And the summary of the speech is clear: Cervera does not intend to experiment or make major changes, neither in the method nor in the players. The coach insisted to his footballers that what will tip the balance between now and the end of the course is defensive reliability, with which Oviedo met again against Tenerife. The plan has to happen, according to Cervera, to return to being that rocky team at the end of the year and get the most out of the chances up. The coach considers that the blue offensive drought is structural, that the team lacks players with a creative profile and what they have to focus on is being solid at the back so as not to get into trouble. “We will play what we know how to do,” Cervera told the Oviedo players.

Then the coach went to work in a very intense session, with lots of ball exercises and news among the squad. One of them negative, because Bretones has discomfort and stayed in the gym. A priori he shouldn’t have any problems getting to the duel against Leganés, but for now he preferred not to force. Faced with this loss, Cervera recruited Osky, Vetusta’s left back, and also Yayo, a midfielder, who came up due to Jimmy’s loss, injured in the shoulder. Masca, who is already in the dynamics of the first team, was also with the seniors.

One of Oviedo’s exercises involved a short possession of the ball and an attack by four strikers for a defender. The objective was to cross quickly from the wings. The players were not fine at the end and Cervera interrupted the exercises several times to give instructions. “What I want is a direct game, to get up fast. That’s what I’m worth,” Cervera bellowed. “The forwards have to open up and fix the rival center-backs, it’s the only way to be able to play,” he assured.

In field number five, the players who are recovering from their injuries continued the session. Mier, Sequeira and Camarasa were there. The latter was recently in Seville with the doctors who treated him since his time at Betis after suffering some discomfort. None of these players, a priori, will arrive in time for the duel against Leganés.
