Ceccarelli won ahead of Jacobs in the 60m final

The Italian Samuele Ceccarelli wins ahead of his compatriot Marcell Jacobs, Olympic champion in the 100m, in the 60m final. Henrik Larsson completes the podium.

The Olympic champion in the 100m, the Italian Marcell Jacobs, visibly injured in the right leg, was dominated, to everyone’s surprise, by his compatriot Samuele Ceccarelli for the title of European champion in the 60m indoors on Saturday in Istanbul .

Ceccarelli, 23, almost unknown until then, won gold in 6 sec 48 ahead of Jacobs (6.50) and Swede Henrik Larsson (6.53).

In 6 sec 47, Ceccarelli had already achieved the best time in the semi-finals, allowing him to become the 5th European performer of all time over the indoor distance. A crazy time for the one who had a record of 6 sec 54, established this season, and had not done better than 6 sec 72 before this winter.

Ceccarelli stood out two weeks ago by becoming Italian champion by already beating the star Marcell Jacobs.

Jacobs (28), Olympic 100m champion in 2021 and 60m indoor world champion in 2022, collapsed as soon as he crossed the line. He then struggled to walk off the track, heavily strapped in his right leg.

Despite his best time of the season achieved in the final, he suffered a small setback. He had to abandon the Worlds in Eugene (United States) in July 2022 due to injury before making up for it by becoming European champion in the 100m in Munich (Germany) in August.
