Boris Becker hints at return as tennis coach

He has been free again since December, and soon Boris Becker could take the next step back into normal life. The tennis legend now hinted at that.

Tennis legend Boris Becker (55) apparently does not rule out a return as a coach. During an appearance on Thursday, he indicated that he was in contact with young tennis players. “Maybe they’ve already called me,” he said without becoming more specific in Rust, southern Baden, at the “CloudFest” Internet industry conference. He did not name any players.

In mid-December, Becker was released in England after 231 days behind bars. The tennis star was sentenced to two and a half years in prison in London at the end of April 2022 for concealing assets worth millions from his insolvency administrators. The reason for the early release was a special regulation for foreign prisoners. However, Becker must continue to cede part of his income to the insolvency administrator.

Achievements as coach of Djokovic

Becker had already worked as Head of Men’s Tennis in the German Tennis Association (DTB) from 2017 to 2020. Before that – after the end of his active career as a player – he had also been the coach of Novak Djokovic and had led the Serbs to seven Grand Slam titles.

He is a tough guy, said Becker in a conversation in English with sports journalist Fraser Masefield, looking back at the past few years. “I’m a survivor.” He admitted to having made many mistakes.

But he probably learned more in his difficult years than in his time as a tennis player. “You have to take responsibility for it. You have to accept it,” said the three-time Wimbledon winner.
