Between debuts and reunions, Toc Toc returns to the stage – El Sol de México

After almost 13 years of its first performance, the play Knock Knock is back to present its third season, starting next Friday, March 17, at the San Ángel Cultural Center. But this time it comes with some new faces and others that are already known to make the audience laugh with this comedy that deals with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) from a very particular point of view.

“The works resonate differently according to what is happening in the world. And nowadays, when the world is so divided and our country is even more so, a work that is so empathetic and that speaks to people about something as important as OCD, that we realize that we all have it when we see the The work gratifies the public,” explained producer Morris Gilbert, director of the Best Theater theater company, at a press conference about this new season.

Under the direction of Rafael Maza, the play, written by the playwright and film director Laurent Baffie, deals with six patients with different manifestations of OCD, who are in a waiting room to have their respective consultations with the Dr. Cooper, who has had a delay in his flight. This is how with their own means they will try to care for each other, as if it were a group therapy, whose dialogues and comings and goings result in a great entanglement.

DEBUTS AND REUNITS

Of the 16 actors who will be alternating their participation in the different interpretations of this staging, for several of them this staging represents their debut in the purely theatrical medium, as is the case of actress Elizabetha Gruener, daughter of Susana Zabaleta, who opens his career on the Mexican stage.

“I love comedy, I think it’s the way to reach people’s hearts and to catch and surprise them. I think that if you start with something very strong, the people themselves put up some resistance, while with comedy you seduce them, invite them, and then, boom!, give that message that has more weight in the work, and you surprise them. to all.

“I think I did not make the decision because of the genre but because this work talks about something that is very important to talk about, even more so with everything that has happened in recent years, with so many advances in technology, and the pandemic. I really believe that mental health and a sense of community, speaking out and destigmatizing all of this is very, very important, ”commented the actress by video call from London, where she directs productions with her own company.

Although they have already had a lot of experience acting on film and television, with this work the actors Polo Morín and Armando Hernández (well remembered for his appearance in the film Loving You hurts) debuted in the theater world.

“I had not ventured into the theater in principle for work reasons. But I also have a lot of respect for the theater, obviously it’s scary, but it also gives great satisfaction and discipline that can only be acquired by doing stage shows. I’ve done a lot of comedy, but never live, so it’s a real challenge, which also encouraged me,” said Armando Hernández, who regrets not knowing how to sing, because it seems to him that musical actors are the most complete.

Toc Toc will also have the participation of Alicia Paola, Leonardo Bono, Lola Cortés, Ulises de la Torre, Pedro Prieto, Dari Romo, Alexa Meneses, Omar Medina, Sandra Quiroz, among others, who coincided in the conference in the joy of returning to the scenarios.

“This is an emblematic work, very well written. I started with this company, which is a source of work for many. Practically my theatrical career, I always presume that I have done more theater than television, I have done it with Best Theater. And sharing this project with colleagues that I knew and others that I did not have is a privilege for me,” commented Dari Romo, who will now play the character of Camilo, who was played by the late actor Héctor Suárez.

During the premiere, on March 17, the plaque will be unveiled for the 1,900 performances that this work will perform, which was also presented in Argentina and Israel with great success.
