Badosa gains strength with a good debut in Miami and Carballés meets Medvedev

Eliminated Pedro Martínez, Jaume Munar and Zapata in the second Masters 1,000 of the season

MADRID, 23 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish tennis player Paula Badosa defeated (7-6(2), 4-6, 6-2) the German Laura Siegemund in a match with a lot of cheating with which she surpassed her debut in the Miami tournament, category 1,000 that, in ATP, left the triumph of Roberto Carballés, against an injured Bernabé Zapata, and the defeats of Pedro Martínez and Jaume Munar.

Badosa won in search of her best version, with one more chance to get it out in Florida, although in the third round she aims to meet the recent Indian Wells champion, Eelena Rybakina, if the Kazakh complies in her match against the Russian Anna Kalinskaya.

The Catalan scored a first set that seemed to get back on track with an initial 3-0, but in the end she had to win in the tie-break. With some bitterness between the two, Badosa gave up control in the second set, with a lot of stoppage and confusion on the part of the German. In fact, the Spanish came to warm up with a ball boy on the other side.

Despite not having all of them with her, Badosa, the only Spanish representative in the WTA draw, achieved a great service game in the third set and left her best version in the last two months, with the mental strength of the best, to sign a solid 6 -2.

The other good news for Spanish tennis this Thursday came from the men’s draw, although at the cost of the physical misfortune of another Spaniard. There could only be one left and Carballés, with a 6-0, 6-3, went to the second round in Miami against a Zapata who was not comfortable at any time, with knee discomfort, until his withdrawal.

The canary will be the first rival of a Daniil Medvedev injured by his clear defeat in the Indian Wells final against the Spanish Carlos Alcaraz, but who before the first Masters 1,000 of the year had a winning streak of 19 titles in Rotterdam, Doha and Dubai.

Meanwhile, Pedro Martínez could not (6-2, 7-6(4)) with the French Quentin Halys and Jaume Munar, who had just lost in his debut in Indian Wells, suffered another early defeat in Miami against the American Aleksandar Kovacevic ( 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-1).
