It took some nerve, but Stan Wawrinka is in the 3rd round of the ATP 1000 tournament in Indian Wells. After 1:45 hours, the Swiss was able to celebrate the 7:6, 6:4 win over Miomir Kecmanovic.

The first round in particular was tough: Wawrinka got out of the starting blocks better and made the first break of the game to make it 4:2. When the 37-year-old was able to serve to win the set at a score of 5: 3, the three-time major champion suddenly made mistakes. Kecmanovic, who is 14 years his junior, benefited and leveled things out again.

3 set balls repelled

The tiebreak degenerated into a thriller. The Serbian world number 31 earned 3 set balls – one of them on his own serve – but could not get the round dry. Wawrinka did better: The Romand struck at the first opportunity in the tie-break with a score of 9: 8 and secured the lead in the set with his fourth mini-break.

In the second round, Wawrinka showed himself to be very solid in his service games, the world number 100 only had to concede 2 points to his opponent after his own serve. Wawrinka got the decisive break when the score was 4: 4 to zero. Shortly thereafter, the Lausanne native ended the game with aplomb.

Reunion with Rune?

In the round of the last 16, Wawrinka may face Holger Rune. The world number 8 from Denmark first has to get rid of the American Mackenzie McDonald (ATP 53).

For Wawrinka it would be the second duel with the up-and-coming Rune. The youngster won his first encounter last fall at the ATP 1000 tournament in Paris-Bercy in 3 sentences.
