WSG defender Behounek: “Referees are just bad”

Raffael Behounek usually doesn’t mince his words.

After the 0-0 win at SCR Altach (match report>>>), the defender of WSG Tirol made a fire speech in front of the “Sky” microphone against the state of the Austrian refereeing system.

“I’ll just say it like I think it: the refereeing was inferior today. I don’t know what’s wrong with our refereeing, they’re just bad overall. I know people will say, the Behounek is bad itself, I can live with that,” the 25-year-old exclaims.

“I can’t leave it like this”

To illustrate, Behounek reports on the yellow card against Kofi Schulz, which he saw in the first half from referee Stefan Ebner. “He gives him a yellow card with the first action, comes to me at half-time and says it wasn’t a foul, it wasn’t a yellow card. I think to myself: That’s no use for us! You take our best left-back out of the game with a wrong decision game, so we can’t buy anything.”

Although he wishes Ebner would watch the game again and decide to do a few whistles differently, the criticism is general.

“It goes through every week. In the 2nd division at GAK and FAC the two penalties, then that with Lustenau… it’s pointless for me to say anything because nothing changes anyway, but I want to say it now . Maybe things will change at some point, maybe the referees will get better. We players make mistakes too, but I can’t let it go like that today.”

No shine without the one storm

In terms of performance, the Tyroleans would have to be satisfied with the point, even if in the fight for the master group a win with a straggler would not have been impractical.

“Altach would have deserved the victory, they missed top chances. With us you have to say clearly: Nik Prelec gone, Thomas Sabitzer injured, that was our one-pointer. So it’s not surprising that not so much came out today like in the last few weeks,” Behounek classified his own performance.
