Monterrey, Nuevo León.- Monterrey defeated Toluca 2-1 in the match corresponding to Day 5 of the 2023 Clausura Tournament of the BBVA MX LIGA.
The BBVA stadium experienced a first half with opportunities for both parties, Toluca controlled the ball while Rayados remained organized in defense and bet on counterattacks to create danger in the goal defended by Tiago Volpi.
The first goal of the night came at minute 17. Germán Berterame got the ball in the middle of the field and sent a stroke behind the defense to Alfonso ‘Poncho’ González, who led into the area and did not hesitate to define the Volpi’s far stick.
13 minutes later, Jesús Gallardo drove down the left flank and hit a low cross that found Poncho González at the height of the penalty mark. Gonzalez defined with his left foot and thus completed the double to celebrate his 200 games played with the Rayados de Monterrey team.
At the start of the second half, Touca tightened the pace of the game and continued to create dangerous chances. The reward came at 61′, Meneses reached the end line and crossed the ball to the edge of the small area, where Maximiliano Araújo shot to the left side of the goalkeeper and scored his first goal with the Red Devils shirt.
The match increased in intensity and both teams had opportunities to add goals to the score, however, the efforts of both teams did not achieve their objectives and the match ended with the score 2-1 in favor of the local team.
This result leaves Monterrey in second place in the general table with 12 points and Toluca ends Day 5 in tenth place with six points. Rayados and Diablos will prepare their matches for Matchday 6 against Atlas and Cruz Azul, respectively.
