Tomás Barrios settles in the quarterfinals of the Córdoba Open

The dream week of Tomás Barrios (212 °) does not stop. The chillanejo adds a new victory in the Córdoba Open and settles for first time in his career in the quarterfinals of an ATP tournament. In addition, he beat a Top 100 player for the second time in a row. Now it was the turn of Bernabé Zapata Miralles (76th)

The Chilean achieved it in a very brave match, where he maintained a high level not only to fight, but to know how to overcome the game against a surface specialist. And it is that the first set was in the hands of the Spanish after a 5-7 where equality was the keynote.

Barrios had four break chances, but couldn’t take any of them. A key factor, which ended up costing him the set, because the Spaniard broke him on the first chance he had. But “Tomi” recovered and managed to give a great tennis class in the second round. Looser and more daring, he managed to break the European’s serve and generate the advantage to take the set 6-4.

With everything tied, Barrios brought out his best tennis. He took advantage of his increased confidence and the bad temper that Zapata Miralles displayed to step forward and generate a great advantage at the start of the sleeve. Of course, the Spanish battled and managed to stay 3-4. Very close to match, but not quite enough. The 212 in the world did not let him continue to grow and he closed the game 6-3.

A victory that crowns a great week for the native of Chillán. Historical even. And it is that throughout this week in Córdoba he has found his best tennis and his best results. It will be the first time that he has played in the quarterfinals of an ATP tournament and he will once again be among the top 200 on the planet. Once the ranking is updated on Monday morning, it will be at least 195 on the ATP.

Along with that, too notched the second and third best wins of his career this week, managing to surpass two top 100 players in a row. On Tuesday he went to the Colombian Daniel Galán, number 83 on the planet and today to Zapata Miralles, who is currently 74 in the ATP ranking. His best record remains the victory in the 2021 Seville Challenger, when he defeated Pablo Andújar, who at the time was ranked 73rd in the world.

Emotions and milestones that occur just after qualifying for the Davis Cup Finals in La Serena, so without a doubt the tennis player’s personal moment could not be better. It is in the midst of this whirlwind of emotions that he will continue to try to break his own limits.

On the other hand, Córdoba once again appears as a dream land for Chileans. Over there Garin was champion in 2020, Tabilo played in the final in 2022 and now Barrios is among the top four. A round in which he could accompany “Gago” (103rd) if he beats Joao Sousa (162nd) on Thursday.
