Vigo will be the headquarters of the Women’s National Team this summer of 2023. The concentration will begin in the Galician city and the first preparation tournament will be played, on May 24, 25 and 26, with powerful rivals such as China and Italy.
The mayor of Vigo, Abel Caballero; the president of the Provincial Council of Pontevedra, Carmela Silva; the president of the FEB, Jorge Garbajosa; and the new president of the Galician Federation, julio bernardezhave presented in the Galician city the International Tournament that will open the preparation of the Women’s Team for the Women’s EuroBasket in Slovenia and Israel.
Miguel Méndez’s team will begin the concentration in Vigo and there they will play their first preparation tournament. The rivals will be China, current runner-up in the world and number 2 in the ranking; and Italy, a historic player in European basketball and 16th in the FIBA ranking.
Women’s basketball has resurfaced in Galicia, with Durán Maquinaria Ensino at LF Endesa; and Baxi Ferrol and Celta Zorka Recalvi at the top of the LF Challenge. Up to four Galician players have participated in the EuroBasket qualifying matches: Raquel Carrera, María Araújo, Paula Ginzo and Marta Canella, as well as coach Miguel Méndez.
Precisely, the mayor Abel Caballero announced that Miguel Méndez will be named distinguished from Vigo in 2023, in addition to ensuring that he is “Excited to host a high-quality tournament in preparation for what will surely be another success for the women’s basketball team.” The president of the Provincial Council of Pontevedra, Carmela Silva, assured that “Vigo will be bigger, becoming the epicenter of women’s basketball for a few days”. The president of the FEB, Jorge Garbajosa, added that “For us it is a special year in which we celebrate 100 years of the Federation, and returning to Vigo with the women’s team is a new reason for joy.”
