The normcore trend can do more than jeans and white sneakers

We love artists like Harry Styles with all his crazy looks or Steve Lacy in a razor-sharp Saint Laurent suit with pointy heels. But it’s the “normal” men’s fashion that sets the tone again, alongside the sophisticated and gender-fluid looks.

What is Normcore?

One of the founders of the style was Steve Jobs, who chose his signature outfit consisting of a black turtleneck sweater, light blue jeans and New Balance 992 sneakers primarily for practical reasons and thus became an icon.

Normcore, at least that’s how the New York Times defined it in its style magazine The Cut, is “fashion for those who know they’re one in 7 billion”. Normcore can also be something of a way of life: the pursuit of equality as a new way of being cool, rather than “otherness” or “authenticity.” In fashion, however, normcore means: a style that stands for ordinary, everyday clothing.

What does normcore fashion look like?

Anyone who thinks that everything is fine, white sneakers and jeans and at best a gray sweatshirt, is fine, is right, but the possibilities are far greater than that. Instead of sneakers you see clogs, for example the “Boston” from Birkenstock, or the “Puddle” by Bottega Veneta, or simple black derbies. Instead of classic light blue jeans, workwear trousers from Carhartt and Dickies also go well. And as a replacement for the normal jacket, a leather blazer or blouson is a good alternative – as an accessory, a baseball cap and classic black sunglasses.

This effortless, practical way of dressing that emphasizes quality and materials rather than obvious fashion display will always be on trend. That way, a wardrobe filled with normcore pieces is totally trend-proof, allowing you to invest in a handful of core pieces that you know you’ll always wear.

What are Normcore sneakers?

For a long time, Adidas and New Balance were the typical normcore sneaker brands. Above all was the white one Stan Smith and the New Balance 992, which Steve Jobs wore as a synonym for the Normalo sneakers. The Adidas Samba and the Nike Air Force One in white or black fall under normcore, as does the Nike Air Monarch, which Martine Rose relaunched in 2019. Basically, Normcore sneakers are simple classics in subtle colors.
