San Juan, February 6, 2023.- The Pirates of the American University (AU) and the Jerezanas of the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) of Río Piedras begin this Tuesday, the defense of their scepter at the inauguration of the basketball tournament of the Interuniversity Athletic League (LAI).
Both teams will have great challenges, since the competition in its regular stage was kept in the format of playing all against all to qualify, only, the best eight quintets to the postseason.
That is why the AU Pirates will face 16 teams and the Jerezanas will play against 14 universities.
The final registration of the universities was 17 teams in the male branch, absent from the court the Guaraguao of the UPR of Utuado. In the women’s category, 15 institutions remained without the presence of the Guaraguaos of the UPR of Utuado, the Jaguares of the UPR of Carolina and the Beavers of the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico (PUPR, for its acronym in English).
The postseason, semifinal and championship series will be a maximum of three games. Basketball is one of the main sports with the greatest attraction in the Sports Festival of the second semester. This will be played on April 23, 25 and 26 at the Palacio de los Deportes in Mayagüez.
