Spanish tax authorities investigate suspicious Piqué transfers – Spain

Tax Authority of Spain found transfers with hidden recipients

The Spanish tax authority (in Spanish, agencia tributaria) detected suspicious movements in the accounts of former footballer Gerard Piqué, after one of the former athlete’s companies – Kosmos Football – signed a contract related to last year’s World Cup.

According to the documents of the Support Unit against Corruption and Organized Crime, cited by the Spanish newspaper El Economista, the Saudi Sela Sport Company Limited, responsible for organizing the competition, transferred almost two million euros on October 12, to later carry out another transfer, with the same amount, just two days later.

What caught the attention of the authorities is that, also on October 14, Piqué made a transfer of 669,649 euros, without a known recipient. The nature of the transfer was named as “taxes”, but the Spanish tax authorities have already realized that no payment has been made by Piqué to the Tax Authority with this amount.

Thus, finance asked Caixabank for proof of all these operations, as well as another transfer, dated 17 September, under the name “payments to the Tax Authority”.

The whistleblower, Miguel Galán, president of Cenafe (National School of Coaches of Spain), argues, quoted by the Spanish newspaper, that these transfers may have been carried out in front of the president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, Luis Rubiales. However, so far, there is no evidence to support this thesis.
