Red Flames miss final win at Arnold Clark Cup after pandering against England: “Law of the strongest” | Save Flames

After victories against Italy and South Korea, the Red Flames were allowed to compete for the Arnold Clark Cup in a direct duel against European champions England.

England started furiously in front of a full stadium in Bristol. The Belgians groaned under the English pressure in the opening minutes and after 12 minutes the dam broke. Kelly tapped in the 1-0.

The Flames had to respond, but were unable to gain a foothold against a dominant England, which was crowned European champion for its own people last summer.

Just before half-time, Williamson made it 2-0, Kelly put another in the basket just after the break. The Flames tried to limit the damage, but Biesmans aggravated the verdict ten minutes before the end with an own goal.

In an animated ending, the Belgian chalice had to be emptied to the bottom. Bronze and Williamson increased the English harvest to six goals, Dhont can still provide a wonderful honor saver in between. The final victory was so for “The Lionesses”.

Janice Cayman: “We are disappointed, but England were just a class above us. England were suffocating and strong on the ball, we had to run after the leather.”

“We played three great matches. It was a good learning process for us. We know what we have to work on. The young people have shown what they can do, the future looks bright for them.”

Yves Serneels: “I had feared in advance that the difference would be there. Today we had to undergo the law of the strongest against a European Championship winner who has taken steps.”

“I feel to the group that this is one or two levels too high. I’m not with the result happy, but we leave the tournament with our heads held high. There are still points to work on, but the resilience of this team is the biggest plus.”
