Arsenal settled for the bare minimum in Leicester on behalf of the 25th day of the Premier League, and Mikel Arteta can only be delighted. On the lawn of the King Power Stadium, the Gunners won by a short header thanks to a goal from Gabriel Martinelli at the start of the second period (1-0).
Solid overall, the Londoners have achieved an 18th league success this season, enough to temporarily take a five-point lead over Manchester City and put a little more pressure on the shoulders of the competition in the title race.
Zinchenko, a year like no other
In the quest for a national championship title, sober victories are sometimes the most significant. If at the end of this 2022-2023 financial year, Arsenal wins the Premier League after nineteen years of waiting, this success on the lawn of Leicester will clearly be in this register.
The decisive Trossard-Martinelli duo
Against the 2015-2016 English champions, the London club quickly got in the right direction with outrageous possession. But against them, the Foxes also had an established game plan: defend as a unit and squirt on the counterattack. Result of the races: the first strike of the local team arrived by Kiernan Drewsbury-Hall in the… 72nd minute!
In the first half, Arsenal thought they opened the scoring with a goal from Leandro Trossard, but VAR canceled the Belgian international’s goal after Ben White found a foul beforehand during Danny Ward’s aerial outing ( 26th). From then on, Trossard turned into a decisive passer for Gabriel Martinelli. So far clumsy in the last gesture, the Brazilian beat Ward with a subtle cross shot (0-1, 46th). After this opener, the match got a little carried away.
Tetê was unable to take over the cross from Harvey Barnes in time (52nd), and the entries of Jamie Vardy and Youri Tielemans were supposed to bring more offensive for Leicester. It was not the case. With his experience, Jorginho played the clock several times and Leicester did not find a solution to the proposed equation. It was a win without madness for Arsenal, but a win nonetheless. And to become champion of England, that’s all that matters. Leicester City knows something about it…
