One of the great promises of state cycling dies after being hit by a truck

BarcelonaThe world of cycling mourns the death of Estela Domínguez on Thursday evening after she was hit by a truck while training in Salamanca. The 19-year-old athlete from Valladolid was shooting at the Villares training ground in the Castilian city. The accident occurred at the intersection of the A-62 motorway with the N-620 road, according to several local media reports.

The accident happened at half past seven in the afternoon. Shortly afterwards, the Civil Guard and emergency services were launched to try to save Domínguez’s life, but the UVI paramedics dispatched to the scene could only confirm the cyclist’s death. As pointed out to The North of Castilethe reason for the hit-and-run was that the truck driver was dazzled by the afternoon sun and therefore could not see Domínguez in the roadway.

The cyclist was a strong promise of state cycling. She had just finished in seventh place in the Spanish cyclocross championship, held a few weeks ago in Vic, which caused the Spanish Cycling Federation (RFEC) to invite her to compete in the World Cup, which was held on 2 of January Domínguez was in Salamanca studying labor relations and combining his studies with professional cycling. In fact, she was about to make her road debut with the Sopela Women’s Team, which had just added her to their ranks.

The unfortunate athlete was part of a lineage of cyclists, as she was the daughter of ex-racer Juan Carlos Domínguez, who at the end of the 90s and at the beginning of the century competed in the main rounds with the Banesto, Kelme or Phonak teams. In his last years as a professional, he coincided on the asphalt with Alejandro Valverde, who through social networks has shown his condolences with the death of Estela Domínguez. “There are no words for something like this. All my affection to the family and loved ones. And especially to his father, with whom I shared a pilot in my early years,” tweeted the ex-cyclist from Murcia.
