MLB: Ian Kinsler returns to Texas as assistant GM

Former Rangers second baseman Ian Kinsler is back with the Texas team as a special advisor to general manager Chris Young, his former teammate in the organization’s minor ranks more than two decades ago.

Young said Monday that Kinsler, who contributed to the club’s only two World Series victories in 2010 and 2011, will be involved primarily in player development and mentoring athletic staff and coaches.

Kinsler, who has appeared in four career All-Star Games, also won the World Series with the Boston Red Sox in 2018, a year before announcing his retirement. Kinsler played 14 major league seasons and spent the last three seasons as special assistant in baseball operations and head of player development for the San Diego Padres. The 40-year-old ex-player lives in the Dallas area, as he has for most of his playing career.

Kinsler represented the United States at the 2017 World Baseball Classic and Israel at the Tokyo Olympics last summer. Additionally, he will lead the Israeli team in next month’s World Baseball Classic.
