Maylin del Toro wins silver in Tel Aviv

Maylin del Toro (63 kg) from Santiago was proclaimed runner-up in the Judo Grand Slam in Tel Aviv, after losing in the final against the Canadian Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard, number one in the global ranking.

The world subtitle in 2022 and Olympic bronze in Tokyo 2020, dominated the Creole with a dislocation technique in one arm, after having scored waza-ari. Thus, she took revenge for what happened a few weeks ago at the Grand Slam in Paris, when del Toro took her off the podium by beating her by Ippon.

Maylin, number 27 in the ranking, surpassed the Brazilian TamireCrudespor in her debut hansoke-make and defeated ManonDeketer, from France, in a match where she successfully defended her advantage by waza-ari. She received that score twice to prevail against the British Lucy Renshall, second in the ranking.

Then, she faced the local judoka, Inbal Shemesh, who had beaten her in the quarterfinals of the Grand Slam in Paris and finally won the title in that fight. This time in the Israeli capital, the indomitable demonstrated her drive by defeating her by accumulation of shidos, before moving on to the decisive instance against Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard.

Maikel Mkencie (81 kg) and Idelannis Gómez (70kg) also represented Cuba on the first date of the Tel Aviv Grand Slam, although they could not advance in their initial bouts. Meanwhile, Magdiel Estrada was fifth in the 73 kg after losing to the Hungarian Mark Hristoven in the fight for bronze.

This Saturday, the last day of the competition, they will have to go out on the tatami for the Greater Antilles: Iván Felipe Silva (90), bronze winner in Paris and Idalys Ortiz (+78 kg) medalist in four Olympic events.
