Badminton Denmark’s sporting management has named Magnus Johannesen as the Comet of the Year 2022. The award was presented to him at the VICTOR DM 2023 in Esbjerg by Badminton Denmark’s chairman, Tore Vilhelmsen.

21-year-old Magnus Johannesen has been named Comet of the Year on the basis of his development and fine results during the past year.

Here the North Jutland won, among other things, the Irish Open and the Dutch International, as well as the second places at the Italian International, the Luxembourg Open and the Austrian Open. In addition, he also helped secure Vendsyssel’s first ever victory in the Badminton League, and now he can call himself Comet of the Year 2022.

– I am incredibly happy. It shows me that I am on the right path and that the things I do every day are the right ones. It’s great to get that recognition and to be named Comet of the Year. So I’m super happy and proud of that, says Magnus Johannesen.

When Magnus Johannesen made his mark on the Danish badminton scene for the first time, he defeated Anders Antonsen in the quarter-finals of the Danish championships in 2020. Antonsen came here as a three-time Danish champion and WC silver winner, while Johannesen was no. 242 in the world rankings and was only 18 year. Still, the Comet of the Year 2022 managed to win 21-11, 21-17.

He has since been admitted to the National Elite Training Center (NETC) in Brøndby in the summer of 2021. Here he is doing his best to continue his development.

– The training at the National Elite Training Center obviously means a lot to my development. But besides the training on the field, I do what I can to optimize all the time. I have assigned a mental trainer, focus on strength training, my diet and sleep, and there are always more things that I put on. In 2023, hopefully I can get out and play more Super 300 tournaments and maybe even Super 500 tournaments as well. So it will be exciting to try your hand at some of the world’s best and travel and learn more about playing in Asia, says Johannesen.

The Komet of the year is awarded each year to a young player or couple under the age of 24 who have distinguished themselves in an outstanding way by having made an extra or different effort and achieved results that differ significantly from before.

In addition to the honor of winning the prize, Magnus Johannesen also receives a check for DKK 5,000 from Badminton Denmark and, not least, comes in distinguished company of former Comets.
