After losing the FA Cup, Liverpool suffered their next defeat in the Premier League. Jürgen Klopp’s team has no chance at Wolverhamptom Wanderers. The nature of the defeat must make the coach think.
Dhe FC Liverpool suffered another bitter away defeat in the Premier League and will have to wait for their first success in 2023. Coach Jürgen Klopp’s team deservedly lost 3-0 (2-0) at Wolverhampton Wanderers, who were in danger of relegation. Meanwhile, Manchester United won 2-1 (1-0) against Crystal Palace with newcomer Marcel Sabitzer outnumbered.
Especially in the early stages, Liverpool presented themselves in a desolate state. The defeat was initiated after five minutes by an own goal by Joel Matip. Shortly thereafter, Craig Dawson (12th minute) increased for Wolverhampton. After a weak first half, Liverpool increased the pressure in the second half, but the Reds rarely became dangerous. Ruben Neves (71st) finally made everything clear for the hosts.
For Liverpool, who are eliminated from the FA Cup and the League Cup, the crisis is deepening. For the Reds it was the third away defeat in a row with three goals conceded – and the fourth winless league game in a row. “Very frustrating, very disappointing. The start of the game was terrible, absolutely terrible; it was the opposite of what we wanted to do. Being 2-0 down after twelve minutes is never helpful, but it is especially so in our situation. That must absolutely not happen,” said Klopp.
In the table, the Klopp team, who played one game less than the competition, fell to tenth place. Liverpool have only won eight of their 20 games this season. The Reds only lost two games last season, now they have lost seven. With 28 goals against, the team has more goals than the table-17. Westham United (25) conceded.
Sabitzer makes his Manchester United debut in the 81st minute
Man United beat Crystal Palace with goals from Bruno Fernandes (7th) from the penalty spot and Marcus Rashford (62nd). United’s Casemiro saw a red card in the 70th minute after assaulting Will Hughes and being checked by the video assistant. Jeffrey Schlupp scored the first goal for Crystal Palace (76′). However, the guests could not do more from the majority.
Austria’s Sabitzer, who joined Manchester United on loan from Bayern Munich this week, was on the bench most of the time at Old Trafford and only came on for Antony in the 81st minute.
