LaLiga Santander | Cádiz destroys the illusion of Girona

In the midst of a storm of gales and pressure from Cádiz, Cádiz destroyed Girona’s illusion of improvement with a hard 2-0. The people from Girona, who arrived after beating Valencia, found themselves inferior from the start of the match and scored the ninth defeat in LaLiga -the third of 2023- to remain anchored to a fight that, although it catches them far -they are eleventh- continues to lurk in terms of points: they have just four more than Valencia, a team that marks the ‘red zone’.

In the previous one, the strong winds threatened to cancel the game, but football continued and, on the field, Sergio González’s players flew out in the first half, pressing each and every one of Girona’s attempts to come out with the moving ball. Ocampo’s bursts of speed were lethal for the people of Girona, who saw their goal fall before facing ten minutes into the game.

The Uruguayan invented a play on the left wing that ended in a cross to Escalante. The Argentine defined, first badly with his right and then well with his left foot, to beat Gazzaniga and make the Catalans suffer, who continued to see how the wind dragged them: after half an hour Guardiola scored the second goal for Cádiz.

For the second half the intention was to change things. Joel Roca, Riquelme and Callens took the pitch in place of Toni Villa, Borja García and a cautioned Bernardo. But Cádiz settled on the mattress of the two goals, withdrew lines and managed to stay in the lead to get a key victory in their fight for permanence.
