Kudus pays tribute to Atsu by lifting his jersey after a goal, the referee does not give him a yellow card

Ajax Amsterdam attacking midfielder Mohammed Kudus scored a superb goal from a free kick in his side’s 4-0 victory over Sparta Rotterdam on Sunday 19 February. The Ghanaian celebrated it by paying tribute to his compatriot Christian Atsu, found lifeless under the rubble after the devastating earthquake which struck Turkey on February 6th.

The 22-year-old, revelation of the last World Cup, lifted his shirt after his goal to reveal a white t-shirt on which was written “RIP Atsu” (Rest in Peace Atsu). The referee of the meeting, Pol van Boekel, did not punish him with a yellow card as required by the regulations.

“A situation more important than football”

“We have rules in football (…) The referee told me that it was not allowed but that he understood me because it was a more important situation than football. Great respect from me for the referee,” the Ghanaian international said after the game.

” I love you forever “. Romelu Lukaku also paid tribute to his ex-teammate and friend Christian Atsu in a message posted on his Instagram account.

The two players had forged a friendly relationship at Everton during the 2014-2015 season. “It was incredible to be by your side,” said Lukaku in particular. Scorer this weekend against Udinese on penalty, the number 90 of Inter Milan celebrated it by raising both indexes to the sky.
