Who is Sportsman of the Year in Lower Saxony? The answer will be available on February 13th. Among the nominees are (or were, because the voting phase has already ended) three equestrian athletes.
There were five athletes, five athletes and five teams to choose from. Julia Krajewski is the only rider among the women and is also the defending champion. After her Olympic victory in 2021, she was voted Sportswoman of the Year in Lower Saxony.
The fact that she was nominated again reflects the consistency of the 34-year-old who rides for RFV Lingen. As is well known, last year she had won silver in the individual ranking at the World Championships in Pratoni del Vivaro and thus the lion’s share of the team gold medal for the German team.
Of course, none of this would be possible without Krajewski’s super mare, Amande de B’Neville, who came to her from France as a young horse and was trained by her herself.
Julia Krajewski’s competitor is the sports shooter Jolyn Beer, who took two first places at her World Championships in Cairo and took first place with the team at both the World Cup and the European Championships.
Then there is the triple jumper Neele Eckhardt-Noack, who was German champion last year and finished fourth at the European Championships.
Paulina Paszek is active in canoe racing, and won silver with her partner in a double at the World Championships over 500 meters and bronze over the same distance at the European Championships. In addition, she was a German champion.
Last but not least there is judoka Pauline Starke, third at the World Championships, fifth at the European Championships and also second and third at the Grand Slam.
Sportsman of the year
The men have a rider in Mario Stevens and a vaulter in Jannik Heiland. Stevens had a great season in 2022, mainly thanks to the Stakkato Gold son Starissa. In June, the two German champions became. In addition, they placed eleventh in the Grand Prix of Aachen, were third in the Grand Prix of Leipzig and Hagen, fourth in Hamburg, seventh in Pinneberg, etc.
Also nominated is Jannik Heiland, who became German champion last year as an individual vaulter on his Hanoverian gelding Dark Beluga FRH and won bronze at the World Cup finals and at the World Championships.
The two equestrian athletes face competition from Igor Wandtke, who is also successful in judo. He was part of the third-placed team at the 2022 World Cup and finished fifth in the Grand Slam.
There is also a canoeist for the men: Jakob Thordsen, who came out on top in the World Cup race in the Czech Republic and finished fourth at the World and European Championships in 2022.
A highly successful swimmer is Sven Schwarz. He won bronze in the 1,500-meter freestyle at the World Cup in Berlin, took fifth place in the European Championships in the 800-meter freestyle and beat all competitors over the same distance in the DM. The second DM gold medal was over 1500 meters.

The teams nominated are: the Braunschweiger Tanz Sport Club, the Hannoversche Yacht-Klub, the women’s fistball team TV Jahn Schneverdingen, the women’s football team from VfL Wolfsburg and the men’s water polo team from Waspo 98 Hanover.
