Mathieu Warnier

Ten years after his last title in Paris, Teddy Riner easily dominated Hyoga Ota in the +100kg final. Audrey Tcheuméo, meanwhile, won the -78kg gold at the expense of her compatriot Chloé Buttigieg.

Teddy Riner has put an end to ten years of waiting. Just over a year from Paris 2024, the boss of French judo was impregnable, even if he admitted before the tournament that he was only at 60% of his capacity. Winner on disqualification after just over a minute from Uzbek Alisher Yuzupov, Teddy Riner opened the doors to a +100kg final against Japanese Hyoga Ota, who has never crossed paths of the double Olympic champion of the category. Very quickly, the Habs imposed their judo and put their opponent in difficulty, penalized a first time after just over a minute and then a second time around thirty seconds later. Back to the wall, Hyoga Ota had to reveal himself but without managing to put Teddy Riner in difficulty, who was however penalized for non-combativeness. This was only a setback since, 57 seconds from the end of regulation time, the Japanese suffered a third fatal penalty. After winning his sixth title in Paris in 2013, Teddy Riner once again adds the tournament to his list with his style equaling the record held by Lucie Décosse.

Tcheuméo also in gold

Like this Saturday during the first day, the French team won two gold medals. A few minutes before Teddy Riner, it was Audrey Tcheuméo who won in the -78kg category during a Franco-French final against Chloé Buttigieg. If the 2021 world champion was in trouble very quickly with two penalties in the first minute, the fight was at knifepoint. Indeed, the two Habs were unable to decide before the Golden Score. An extension that lasted just over 90 seconds. Indeed, Audrey Tcheuméo knew how to get the waza-ari which assures her a sixth gold medal within the framework of the Paris Grand Slam. Dominated by the German Timo Cavelius in the Golden Score in the semi-finals, Alpha Oumar Diallo was able to remobilize when challenging the Emirati Nugzari Tatalashvili for the bronze medal of -81kg. Seeing his opponent receive three penalties when half of the regulation time of the fight had just been reached, the Habs were able to savor a bronze medal which offers great prospects just over a year from Paris 2024.

Dicko and Tolofua share the podium

After her defeat in the quarter-finals against the Turkish Kayra Sayit, Romaine Dicko was able to recover with a success by two waza-ari on the Dutch Marit Kamps to open the doors of a fight for the bronze medal. Opposed to another Turkish, Hilal Ozturk, the European and world champion imposed her judo to, again, win thanks to an immobilization that made the decision. A podium of +78kg on which she shared the third step with her compatriot Julia Tolofua. After her Golden Score loss to Maya Akiba in the quarter-finals, she got the better of Léa Fontaine by ippon in her first repechage fight. Opposed to Kayra Sayit for the bronze medal, the native of Wallis and Futuna cracked the Turkish, disqualified after receiving three penalties in less than two minutes. Marie-Eve Gahié had to settle for the silver medal. Opposed to the Spaniard Ai Tsunoda Roustant, the European champion of -70kg last year was too undisciplined against an opponent who knew how to be aggressive from the start to hope to win. Scooping a third penalty at the very end of the fight, the Parisian conceded defeat without being able to defend her chances at the Golden Score. With eleven medals, including four gold, France finished the weekend in first place in the standings.
