Hubert Sturm (Judoka) – Wikipedia

Hubert Storm (* 16. November 1934[1] in Silesia)[2] is a former German judoka.

Sturm was a judo fighter from 1953.[3] In 1959, the member of the HSG DHfK Leipzig won the East German lightweight championship.[4] In 1960 he completed his studies at the German University for Physical Culture, in his diploma thesis he dealt with the subject Studies on injuries in judo, their causes and ways of preventing them.[5]

Sturm became a coach in 1960, his first place of work was Strausberg.[6] The judoka he supervised won, among other things, a bronze medal at the Summer Olympics, four medals at world championships and 17 European championship titles.[3] From 1972 worked as a trainer in Frankfurt (Oder),[2] he became head coach at ASK Forward Frankfurt (Oder).[7] After the end of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), he played a key role in founding the Brandenburg Judo Association. In Frankfurt (Oder), thanks to Sturm’s involvement, a federal judo base was established,[3] where he was responsible for leading the state coaches and controlling the performance development of the sponsored judoka. From 2002 to 2009 he was chairman of the Brandenburg Judo Association,[8] for a time he also held the position of honorary managing director in the association.[9] At the German Judo Federation[10] and at district level he was a member of the audit committee,[11] in the GDR, Sturm temporarily chaired such bodies in Frankfurt (Oder) and Cottbus.[12]

In 2008 he became Honorary President of the Brandenburg Judo Association. Sturm received the Golden Badge of Honor from the German Judo Federation as well as honorary membership of the association. In November 2014 he became the eighth person in Germany[13] awarded the 9th Dan.[6] In December 2019, Sturm received the Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany from the Prime Minister of Brandenburg, Dietmar Woidke. On the occasion of this honor, the German Judo Federation described Sturm as “one of the most important personalities in judo sport in Germany”.[14]
