American athlete Fred Kerley said on Tuesday that his main goal for 2023 is to complete the 100m-200m double at the Budapest World Championships in August.

The reigning 100m world champion, silver medalist in the distance at the Tokyo Olympics, is the main attraction at the Maurie Plant meeting in Melbourne on Thursday, where he will make his season debut. Kerley is one of only three men (along with Michael Norman and Wayde van Niekerk) to have run in under 10 seconds in the 100m, under 20 seconds in the 200m and under 44 seconds in the 400m.

For 2023, he decided to focus on the 100m and 200m, where he was knocked out in the series due to cramp at last year’s World Championships in Eugene. “Every time I step on the track, it’s gotta be something fast“Kerley told reporters. “Last year (at Eugene) I failed in the 200 so double gold is the only thing on my mind right now“, assured the Texan of 27 years.

Kerley, who has a personal best of 19.76 seconds, is aiming for a time under 20 seconds in Melbourne. “Every time I set foot on the track, I expect something better, every time“, he said. His main challenger in this recovery race could be the Australian Rohan Browning.
