Manuel Neuer sharply criticizes FC Bayern and has been in the crossfire of criticism ever since. Now he has support. Sepp Maier is the first former Bayern professional to take Neuer’s side. He has his reasons.

In the discussion about Manuel Neuer’s criticism of FC Bayern, the former national goalkeeper coach Sepp Maier sided with the goalkeeper. The 78-year-old told Sport1 that he was the captain of FC Bayern and was allowed to speak his mind, especially since the dismissed goalkeeping coach Toni Tapalovic was his friend.

The separation from Tapalovic “was wrong,” said the 1974 world champion. “Of course I’m on Manu’s side. That’s logical. I used to be a goalkeeper too, so Manu is more important to me. I also know him and Tapalovic well,” said Maier.

The former goalkeeper of FC Bayern, who was both goalkeeping coach for the German soccer record champions and for the national team, also criticized the club management around CEO Oliver Kahn and sports director Hasan Salihamidzic.

According to Kahn, Neuer’s statements in interviews with “SZ” and “The Athletic” “neither do justice to him as captain nor to the values of FC Bayern”. Salihamidzic had accused the 36-year-old of “putting his personal interests here above the interests of the club”.

In the interviews, Neuer verbally attacked the master’s club leadership for the separation from Tapalovic. That was “the most blatant” thing he had experienced in his career, said the newcomer who had been missing for a long time with a broken leg. “It was a blow for me when I was already on the ground. I felt like my heart was being ripped out.”

Maier sees it differently. “Manu is allowed to speak his mind. Then it can Brazzo (Nickname of Salihamidzic, d. editor) think right or not. Manu is a mature player and a fine and free person,” he said.

Neuer is the captain and is allowed to say: “I used to say my opinion when I didn’t like something. I didn’t go public with that, but said it internally. But Manu has already saved so many games for FC Bayern and always delivered top performances, so he can show his disappointment. That’s human.”

Maier was once fired himself

Maier is the first former Bayern player to take Neuer’s side. He had previously criticized FC Bayern for signing Yann Sommer. Maier once looked after the current Bayern CEO Oliver Kahn as a goalkeeper trainer during his time as a world-class keeper and was also sorted out at the DFB – similar to Tapalovic now – at the time.

The national coach at the time, Jürgen Klinsmann, dismissed him from his position as goalkeeping coach for the national team. Maier had spoken out publicly for Kahn and against Jens Lehmann. Maier has no close connection to Bayern sports director Hasan Salihamidzic.
