In the 0-1 draw against Tottenham, Haaland once again remained goalless. This was the fifth time in his tenth appearance since the World Cup break. For comparison: In his 18 games before the World Cup break, he also remained goalless five times. In addition, he has not scored in any of the four away games this year.
The value of eight goals in ten games (0.8 per game) since the winter break is still remarkable, but also no longer at the pre-World Cup level. There he had scored 23 goals in 18 games (1.27 per game, about half a goal more on average).

England legend Jamie Carragher sees it that way too. He told Sky Sports after the Tottenham game: “He’s still well up the goalscoring charts but I think we’re only seeing 60 per cent of Erling Haaland. I know that doesn’t happen that often because of the way City play, but he comes from Borussia Dortmund in a league that’s designed for counterattacks.”
And further: “It goes there and you see the rapid pace that he has – we don’t see it. Maybe he also chose the wrong club to reach his best level.”
The former Liverpool star also makes an interesting cross-comparison: “Manchester City scored exactly the same number of goals (editor’s note: 53) in the last Premier League season as they do now, although Erling Haaland scored 25 times .”
His tough conclusion: “But they conceded more goals and it’s also much easier to counter them. So they are a different team – and a weaker team – with Erling Haaland on the team.”
Carragher concludes: “But again, it’s not his fault. Manchester City will not play counter-attacking football as a team, that’s not Pep Guardiola’s way.”
Haaland still has plenty of time this season to give his critics the lie. Above all, a victory in the Champions League would certainly silence all negative voices…
