Emotion begins to rise at Pau Gasol

NBA – The Spaniard’s jersey will be retired by the Lakers in ten days. A great moment for the double NBA champion.

Rewarded with the “Kobe and Gigi Bryant WNBA Advocacy” trophy during the All-Star Game, for his promotion and support of women’s basketball, Pau Gasol is about to experience a much bigger event.

On March 7, his #16 jersey will be retired at the Lakers and the Spaniard will thus become the 11th player to know this honor in Los Angeles after Elgin Baylor (#22), Jerry West (#44), Wilt Chamberlain (#13) , Gail Goodrich (#25), Magic Johnson (#32), Jamaal Wilkes (#52), Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (#33), James Worthy (#42), Shaquille O’Neal (#34) and Kobe Bryant ( #8 + #24).

“I’m starting to get nervous, feeling the excitement around this moment,” confesses the legend of Hispanic basketball for Gigantes. “It’s very strong, it’s very special. I want to savor this moment, share it and thank all the people who have been part of my career. For me, the most important thing is to share things. »

During his career at the Lakers, between 2008 and 2014, did he ever think of becoming a legend of the franchise and then having his jersey hanging from the ceiling of the Crypto.com Arena?

“We don’t talk about it between players and it doesn’t cross our minds much. On the walls of the training hall, there are all the titles, numbers and names of the players whose shirts have been removed. It is a source of inspiration for us players, like a reminder that we are part of something very big, historic. In the case of the Lakers and the Celtics, we are talking about the most prestigious franchises in the league. Seeing the names requires the best of yourself, and not to be one day among them because it’s beyond you, but to get closer to them. »
