Chris Dobey celebrated his first win of the day when he took part in the Premier League Darts for the first time. The Englishman, who only qualified for the eight-strong field on Sunday with the Masters title, defeated the Dutch superstar Michael van Gerwen 6:5 in the final in Belfast.
Dobey, who was humiliated by van Gerwen 5-0 sets in the World Cup quarter-finals on January 1, kept up well with the six-time Premier League winner this time and finally ended the match with a 160 checkout.
In the quarter-finals, the 32-year-old, who only appears in 21st place in the PDC rankings, beat former Scottish world champion Peter Wright 6:3 and his compatriot Nathan Aspinall 6:4 in the semi-finals. Defending champion Van Gerwen took revenge in the quarterfinals against English world champion Michael Smith with a score of 6:3 for losing the World Cup final.
As in the previous year, there are 16 match days in the Premier League this year, the top four qualify for the play-off in which the overall winner will be determined on May 25 in London.
