Davis Cup: Double victory against Switzerland – a real thriller! – TENNIS

One more win before the group stage!

The German doubles Andreas Mies (32) and Tim Pütz (35) won the Davis Cup in Trier against the Swiss Stan Wawrinka (37) and Dominic Stricker (20) 6: 7, 6: 3, 6: 4. This puts Germany ahead of the final individual 2-1 lead.

Olympic champion Alexander Zverev (25) can now complete the next round in September with a win against Marc-Andrea Hüsler (26), in which Germany would then host the tournament. The game is live on sportbild.de.

Mies: “Playing for Germany is always something special. It took me a bit of a run-up at first, but I will never forget how we kept our hearts on the pitch with you as an audience.”

But even if the double was a German bank in recent years, it was not a sure-fire success against the strong Confederates. Wawrinka in particular showed an extremely strong performance, resulting in an incredibly exciting first set that was only decided in the tie break. And Switzerland got it: 7:6.

Only then did the game tip in favor of the DTB team, with Boris Becker (55) sitting in the pits and cheering again and again, just like on the first day. Even the famous Becker fist could be seen from time to time.

Pütz showed more and more often that he is the quartet’s best server on the field. Stricker did not reach the level of Wawrinka with the guests, while Mies and Pütz harmonized better and better and were particularly strong on the net.

This is how the all-important set equalization succeeded with the 6:3. Mies kept pushing the audience and most of the 4,200 spectators in the sold-out arena followed him and raved. They did that more often from now on, because a real thriller developed in the decisive passage.

Up to 3:3, both teams didn’t give each other much. Then Mies and Pütz managed to break with a crashing return festival. But that wasn’t the only thing. The Return Festival became the Break Festival. “Switzerland is one of the toughest competitors you can have in qualifying,” said Mies.

Wawrinka and Stricker hit back immediately before Mies and Pütz played the Swiss against the wall with a clean sheet and reclaimed the break they had just lost. This is how Pütz served to win the match. The Germans did not let this chance pass them by. After 2:16 hours, the duo converted their first match point: 6:4 and the 2nd round very close.
