Ciccone wins stage and leadership of the Volta in Alto de Pinos

BARCELONA, 2 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Italian cyclist Giulio Ciccone (Trek-Segafredo) won the second stage of the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana this Thursday, disputed between Novelda and Alto de Pinos over 178.2 kilometers, and is the new leader of the Valencian round.

Ciccone attacked from the group of favorites with about 200 meters to go and took the sprint against Britain’s Tao Geoghegan Hart (INEOS Grenadiers) and Spain’s Pello Bilbao (Bahrain-Victorious), with Aleksandr Vlasov (BORA-hansgrohe) fourth and Mikel Landa (Bahrain-Vitorious) fifth, all with the same time.

However, the bonuses allow Ciccone -who was tenth in the first stage- to take the overall lead with 4 seconds over Geoghegan Hart, 5 over Bilbao and 10 over a group of six riders led by Alex Aranburu (Movistar Team). .

It was a busy stage, with a breakaway defended by the Spanish Javier Romo (Astana Qazaqstan Team) and the Italian Alessandro De Marchi (Team Jayco AlUla) up to 3.8 kilometers to the finish line, when they were neutralized by the peloton.

On the final slopes of Alto de Pinos, it was the American Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates) who was the first ‘rooster’ to jump out of the peloton, followed by the Spaniard Mikel Landa but, now all together, it was Ciccone who attacked as soon as he gave the last corner and won with a margin and ease.
